Name: Eddie Bruce
Age: 44
Gig: Full-time performer / principal of
Eddie Bruce Entertainment
Favorite local venue: Odette's
by Thomas Walter Over the past 25 years. Eddie Bruce has entertained people all over
the tri-state area. Beginning in the ‘80s, Bruce hosted the popular dance show “Dancin’ On
Air” and was also a talk show host on Philadelphia’s WWDB-FM.
Soon after, Bruce began to work with his orchestra, the Eddie Bruce Orchestra.
And after
more than 3,000 parties performed, Bruce and his orchestra are
one of the most sought after in the area. Highlighting these many years
of performances, the Eddie Bruce Orchestra recently performed at the grand
gala
opening of the Kimmel center and the past 17 New Year’s Eve high roller
parties at the Bally’s Taj Mahal, Atlantic City.
Beyond the Eddie Bruce Orchestra, Bruce has also become widely known in the area for his cabaret
performances. More intimate than his performances with the orchestra, Bruce
is usually accompanied by a piano, bass and drums. “Cabaret is an intimate performance of music and conversation that
gives an insight into the personal life of the performer. It is a very up-close
and
personal performance,” Bruce said. Last year Bruce performed a show
titled “Newley Discovered,” which featured the life of legendary
composer and singer Anthony Newley. It received rave reviews in both Philadelphia
and New York City. This year, Bruce highlights the life and music of Tony
Bennett with “Bruce on Bennett.” |
How did “Bruce
on Bennett” show come about?
I was looking for a new cabaret show idea and then I

Former "Dancin' on Air" host, Eddie Bruce, will
perform "Bruce on Bennett"—a tribute to Tony Bennett—at
Maggiano's Little Italy in Center City Saturday and Sunday and
then at Odette's in New Hope April 18-19. |
saw Tony Bennett last summer
at the
Mann
Center,
his performance really got me emotionally.
I
saw
other
performances there last summer, and they
played great music but it didn't touch me,
and then I saw him
and it got me emotionally and I realized that is where I live
musically. Then I thought to myself, ‘Let me do a tribute to him while
he is still alive, rather then wait until he is gone.’
What can
a person look forward to or expect when they see the “Bruce
on Bennett” show?
I think the main thing is great music. I am calling it a loving tribute to
Tony Bennett. So I see it as the great American songbook, the way Tony Bennett
treats it, only done as a tribute to him.
Will each performance feature the same songs?
Yes, the show is a set show, with a possible slight variation between shows because
there are so many great Tony Bennett songs. Most likely the show will feature
between 121 or 15 songs and then conversation about what these songs have meant
to me personally. Cabaret is a really intimate personal medium, so it’s
not just singing songs, it is talking about the songs and why they mean something
to you – where you first heard the song and what was your attraction to
the song, plus tying that in with information about the artist.
